The Chess Champion from Videomaster is a chess computer incorporating a 16-key keypad with information displayed on a four digit LED display. There are six levels, four of which are usable for normal chess.

The Chess Master Videomaster display daughter board has 4 x 7 digit displays plus a decimal place, the leds provided are very dim and some segments were not working. The solution is to replace all the Leds with 0603 SMD’s, so all the segment look the same intensity. Used a hot iron to remove then old leds and replaced SMD 0603 Red Leds, below shows one segment replaced and lit up.
