The Chess Champion from Videomaster is a chess computer incorporating a 16-key keypad with information displayed on a
four digit LED display. There are six levels, four of which are usable for normal chess.
The word mancala means to transfer in Arabic. This game, which by some estimates is 7,000 years old, challenges players to move pieces from bin to bin in its special board. Many rule variations exist, and mancala is played in some form in almost every African country.
There are over 800 different types for this turn-based strategy game. The boards can range from something simple with two rows of bins to more artistically-crafted designs made to look like things like seashells or animals.
The Chess Master Videomaster display daughter board has 4 x 7 digit displays plus a decimal place, the leds provided are very dim and some segments were not working. The solution is to replace all the Leds with 0603 SMD’s, so all the segment look the same intensity.
Used a hot iron to remove then old leds and replaced SMD 0603 Red Leds, below shows one segment replaced and lit up.
This ROM was discovered in the Chess Champion computer which another project to reverse engineer and fix,
as this is a 2K rom I thought it would be interesting to dump the and examine the code.
